COUNCIL OF EUROPE PROJECT APPROVED

The SUA has just received written confirmation from the Council of Europe's Directorate General IV: Education, Cultural and Heritage, Youth and Sport, that our Directorate's Youth project application, entitled "First International Aramean Young Leadership Training Programme: The Road to the Future" has been approved by the Programming Committee of the European Youth Centre and the European Youth Foundation.

This Global Youth event will take place in 2011 and will be held in Strasbourg, France. It will include 30 youth working together for 6 days with experts in their respective fields discussing issues of concern to the Aramean people.

Two primary aims of the event (amongst many others) will be to:

1. initiate and develop Aramean youth leadership so that young Arameans can learn more about their fundamental human rights and minority rights, will share their knowledge with their peers at home and (if necessary) apply their individual and collective human rights;
2. guide Aramean youth leaders in the process of reflection upon their distinct identity and to assist them in contextualizing their identity within the different societies they live in.

There are many people to thank here and we will send out further information soon but this is a tremendous award for the SUA and it will be a great event for all involved.

UNITED NATIONS EXPERT MECHANISM ON THE RIGHTS OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES

The SUA also wishes to announce that two members of the SUA, Mr Basil Oezkaya and Ms Shamiram Youssef, will be attending the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP) Session at the Geneva United Nations office in Geneva. The session will be held from 12-16 July. This mechanism has been created by the Human Rights Council in order to protect Indigenous Populations.

We wish both Ms Youssef and Mr Oezkaya the best of luck in their meetings at the United Nations office as they seek to promote and protect the interests of the Aramean (Syriac) people.

May God bless both of them! The SUA will report further on the event shortly.
