This is a brief update on activities by the Syriac Universal
Alliance (SUA), in addition to an earlier message:
1. SUA PROJECT AT COUNCIL OF EUROPE HEADQUARTERS IN
STRASBOURG: Last week's anounced project, entitled "First
International Aramean Young Leadership Training Programme:
The Road to the Future" (30 Aramean participants from 10
different countries), will take place at the headquarters of
-- and by the much-appreciated support of -- the Council of
Europe in Strasbourg (France) during a full week in June
2011. More information and details will follow in due course.
2. SUA AT UN OFFICE IN GENEVA: The SUA also announced Mr.
Basil Oezkaya (Germany) and Ms. Shamiram Youssef (Sweden),
two of the SUA's UN NGO Delegates, as participants in the
Third Session of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of
Indigenous Peoples at the United Nations office in Geneva
from 12-16 July. After the weekend, a report of their
successful activities will follow with photos as well as the
oral statement on "Active participation of Indigenous
Peoples in decision-making processes" submitted to this
important forum by the SUA.
3. MOR GABRIEL COURT TRIAL ONCE AGAIN POSTPONED: On
Wednesday 14 July 2010, the SUA issued a press release about
the court trial held in relation to one of the several Mor
Gabriel Monastery trials in Midyat, Southeast-Turkey. Not
surprisingly, this court case has been postponed once again,
this time to 3 November 2010. For surprising and annoying
elements, however, read the whole press release at http://www.facebook.com/l/52237k05WZeI07qk0Og6IAsMseA;sua-ngo.org/?p=media&bb=27
(at the bottom there is a link to the original press release
in PDF format).
4. ALARMING ANTI-ARAMEAN (SYRIAC) INTIMIDATIONS IN
SOUTHEAST-TURKEY: Yesterday, on Friday 16 July 2010, the SUA
issued another press release. This time about alarming
anti-Christian and anti-Aramean activities that are
increasingly taking place lately in the Tur ‘Abdin region in
Southeast-Turkey. Two acts of vandalism, by Muslim
extremists who aim to deter the last remnant of the
indigenous Christian Arameans in their ancestral homeland,
concern the over 1,700-year-old Cathedral in Nisibin and the
more than 1,600-year-old Mor Gabriel Monastery. For more
information and photos that contain anti-Christian and
pro-Islamic slogans, see http://www.facebook.com/l/522376OLfHWqpAnFddqiC6_0hKA;sua-ngo.org/?p=media&bb=28

With all the best wishes,
